COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A group of young residents led by DeVante Wood is helping neighbors clear icy streets and sidewalks in several local areas. They organized after a Facebook post as residents face frozen cars and blocked walkways during the severe freeze.  WSET

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Vault, a new bar & lounge at 1030 Main, will open on Friday and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. offering signature cocktails & curated hors d’oeuvres, event space, and a full restaurant coming soon.  WSLS 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • Renowned saxophonist J. Plunky Branch and his band Oneness kick off Black History Month with a performance at the University of Lynchburg this weekend, while E.C. Glass Theatre hosts a fundraising show for a competition and folk music band NiteKap performs at the Bower Center for the Arts in Bedford.  The News & Advance

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Virginia State Parks is hosting the Great Backyard Bird Count from Feb. 13 through Feb. 16, inviting local bird enthusiasts to join programs at various parks such as Bear Creek Lake (a site hosting related events) to record observations for conservation.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local government agencies announced help for workers who lost their jobs through no fault of their own. The program available now for eligible residents will offer job seekers + benefits assistance.  WDBJ7
  • 10 News and the Virginia Treasury are teaming up to help locals locate unclaimed property (including bank accounts and digital refunds such as leftover PayPal balances) held after five years. Residents can file claims for free and may receive a check within 7 to 10 business days.  WSLS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Lynchburg Fire Department reported extra calls today as the cold snap puts residents at risk for hypothermia, heart attacks, and slips. Residents are advised to remain indoors unless necessary to venture outside.  WSET

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • A local farm stays open today during winter weather, maintaining normal operations despite cold conditions. The facility will continue to serve residents as the winter weather persists.  WDBJ7
