- ➤ Miriam’s House held a ribbon cutting yesterday (Feb. 12) at its new temporary family shelter on Magnolia Street in Lynchburg to help families facing homelessness. Executive Director Sarah Quaranotto said the shelter is designed with private spaces and bathrooms to serve 40 to 45 families a year. WSET
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A barn at Homeplace Restaurant burned on Feb. 12, prompting local firefighters to respond quickly + damage assessments are underway + officials have yet to release further details. WDBJ7
- ➤ Lynchburg first responders spent nearly four hours rescuing Winnie when the dog fell into a 50-foot backyard sinkhole on Florida Avenue Wednesday night; the rescue used treats and technical equipment to lift the animal, and despite minor cuts and a small head fracture, Winnie is now safe. WSET
- ➤ On Thursday, Feb. 12, Lynchburg FD rescued Winnie—a dog caught in a house fire that displaced one resident—by quickly arriving onsite. WDBJ7
- ➤ Rescue crews pulled a local dog from a 50-foot well yesterday + the animal is reported safe after a challenging extraction. WDBJ7
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Following layoffs at Yokohama Tire, local groups have organized hiring events to help displaced workers explore new job opportunities. The events will be held over the coming days at local job centers + community spaces. WDBJ7
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A state law banning outdoor burning from midnight to 4:00 p.m. will go into effect on Sunday, Feb. 15 and run through April 30 in areas 300 feet from woods or dry grass (this rule covers campfires and debris burning) to reduce wildfire risks. WDBJ7
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Hometown Health offered new heart health options and urged patients to perform self-checks between regular screenings + consider brain training to boost overall wellness. The initiative aims to help residents manage flu impacts on heart and brain health. WDBJ7
