CRIME NEWS

  • Daniel William Jackson, 32, waived his preliminary hearing Tuesday morning in Campbell County and will face a grand jury on charges including second-degree murder, strangulation of Tiffany Ann Fortuna, and concealing a dead body in Lynchburg — police said the case stems from a body found on Garfield Avenue last May.  WSET

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Amherst County balanced its fiscal year 2025-26 budget on March 18 by bridging a more than $220,000 shortfall and approving a 3% pay raise for employees—keeping their health insurance costs steady. The budget, effective July 1, avoids local tax increases and new positions—with supplemental spending decisions postponed until September.  The News & Advance
  • City Manager Wynter Benda and staff held Budget & Brews sessions in all four wards last week to explain Lynchburg’s proposed fiscal year 2026 budget, which keeps the property tax rate at 89 cents per $100 and funds public safety, education, infrastructure, and quality of life. Residents will share their views at a public hearing on April 22 before council meets on May 27 to adopt the budget.  The News & Advance
  • On Tuesday morning, the Lynchburg Fire Department confirmed that southbound lanes of Route 29 near Kemper Street were closed and northbound lanes remained open with delays.  WSET

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bedford County has partnered with Lynchburg to co-host two national disc golf tournaments in April and October 2026 after approving a $35,000 hosting fee—county officials expect the events to generate over $5 million in business sales and more than $200,000 in local taxes. The county also set aside $30,000 for a bid to co-host the 2028 pro world championship, with the fee payable in 2027 if the bid is approved—officials said the plan may enhance regional economic activity.  WSET
