- ➤ On Tuesday, 33-year-old motorcyclist Maquale Moon lost control on Route 29—striking the center median before being taken to Lynchburg General Hospital where he later died—and friends remember his joyful and kind spirit as police continue investigating the crash. WSET

- ➤ BWXT held a ribbon cutting on March 26th at its new Innovation Campus on Mount Athos Rd in Lynchburg to open 200,000 square feet of labs focused on advanced nuclear system research. The campus will create dozens of new jobs and support work for the navy, defense, and space agencies — a move that reflects Virginia’s push for clean, reliable energy. WSET

- ➤ The International Ota Benga Memorial Committee celebrated its 20th anniversary on March 17 in Lynchburg—honoring artist Ann van de Graaf and other members who have worked to keep Benga's memory alive. - ➤ Roanoke officials are planning to build a new high school because both Patrick Henry and William Fleming high schools have too many students—long-term forecasts show enrollment will drop by 406 in five years before rising again. In Lynchburg, school officials are set to close T.C. Miller Elementary School to become a pre-K center as a predicted drop of 498 school-age students over the next five years unfolds despite overall population gains. Cardinal News

- ➤ After a very wet February, Lynchburg and nearby areas now face a dry March with only 0.43 inches of rain so far and an increased risk of small wildfires. A storm system expected Sunday and Monday may bring rain + ease the dry conditions. Cardinal News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City Council approved the Wiggington Road rezoning for 750 new homes two weeks ago—though some members and local residents remain upset about nearly $3.8M in road improvement costs that may force cuts in other projects. Critics warn the decision could add up to $2M in extra debt, and the new development is set to finish in 10 years—raising concerns among taxpayers. WSET
- ➤ The Lynchburg City Council voted to transfer land from City Schools to Parks and Recreation so they can redevelop it into a park with a playground, pavilions and a multi-purpose field—this site once held the old athletic facility for Heritage Elementary and High School and will be the first park in Lynchburg's Third Ward. - ➤ City leaders in Lynchburg proposed raising water, sewer, and stormwater rates for the 2026 budget during a City Council work session. Water Resources Director Timothy Michell said families could see an average monthly bill increase of $2.90—new rates stay below the Virginia average and will help cover rising costs and fund projects. - ➤ Attorney General Jason Miyares said a law passed in 2023 gives Virginians the right to ask 23andMe to delete their genetic data within 30 days. Although 23andMe filed for bankruptcy on Sunday night in Missouri federal court, the company said it would continue to manage customer data—Miyares encouraged anyone concerned to make a deletion request.
