COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ United Way of Central Virginia is hosting the 5th Annual 5k on the runway at Lynchburg Regional Airport on Saturday, April 26 at 5 p.m. Registrations close on April 2 — the race is limited to 600 runners and those interested can sign up to run, volunteer, or attend as a spectator. WFXR TV
- ➤ Crews with LG Flint worked all day Friday to build the new St. Jude Dream House at Blackwater Run Development on Elmwood Ave—it will have four bedrooms, three and a half baths, and 3,000 square feet to help raise funds for children at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Ticket reservations will open on May 21. WSET
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Lynchburg police, working with the Central Virginia Drug and Gang Task Force, arrested Cory Anton Johnson Jr. on March 27 in connection with an ongoing 2023 drug investigation and later searched his home and vehicle, seizing narcotics, cash, firearms and other contraband + he now faces multiple felony charges including breaking and entering, use of a firearm in a felony, grand larceny and criminal street gang participation while being held without bond at Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority. - ➤ Lynchburg Police arrested Shannon Couch at the Caterpillar Clubhouse after an anonymous call reported alleged child abuse, and a parent said she did not see any warning signs in class because cameras were not installed— the daycare said it is fully cooperating with the investigation. WSLS 10
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Heritage High School resource officer Austin Rowland spoke out on bullying prevention after the suicide of 10-year-old Autumn Bushman sparked talks about bullying in schools. Rowland said many students do not report bullying, so school leaders work with law enforcement to address serious incidents while urging families to talk openly about these issues. WDBJ7
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lynchburg’s City Council and School Board committee has recommended that the school division use its current $68.4 million plan for needed upgrades instead of building new schools and support Interim Superintendent Dr. Ben Copeland’s four-phased plan to close and convert TC Miller Elementary to a pre-k hub. The committee will send its recommendations to both bodies and meet again (April 3 at 5 p.m. in the City Hall Training room) to decide on final actions. WSET
- ➤ Bedford County Board of Supervisors agreed this week to set aside $100,000 for a legal fund to fight state plans that would remove local oversight of large solar projects—this measure aims to protect farmland amid centralization efforts. The fund will support legal challenges against moves to shift decision-making power away from local communities. The News & Advance
- ➤ Blue Ridge Parkway leaders held a virtual briefing Friday morning to update on storm recovery after Hurricane Helene severely damaged over 300 miles of the park and caused at least 57 landslides and heavy debris. Officials said cleanup has progressed with 217 miles in Virginia open for normal traffic—repair work continues and visitors are advised to check road conditions as some sections remain closed.
