ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A motorcyclist sustained life threatening injuries after a crash Saturday night at the intersection of Fort Avenue and Long Meadows Drive and was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital before being flown to UVA Hospital — police continue to investigate. WSET
- ➤ Altavista Fire Company responded at 1:43 a.m. on March 29 to a blaze on the 1000 block of 7th Street where firefighters found a single-story home with heavy smoke and flames and confirmed that one resident had died after an officer noticed the fire during a routine patrol. WDBJ7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ NASA planetary protection engineer Moogega Cooper spoke at Randolph College’s SciFest on Thursday and urged attendees to stay curious and question rules using lessons from her Mars mission work—while Heritage High School science teacher Alex Drumheller received the 2025 Science Teaching Award with a $1,500 stipend and $1,000 classroom grant. - ➤ The Virginia Board of Education has begun revising the grading system on state tests to align them with NAEP proficiency levels—if approved, the tests could become among the toughest in the nation to pass. Some board members warn that the change may cause thousands of high school students to fail their SOL exams and be denied diplomas. The News & Advance

- ➤ At a March 18 Lynchburg City Schools Finance & Facilities Committee meeting, Board Vice Chair Martin Day passed along Councilman Martin Misjuns’ concern that Sandusky Elementary's layout may hinder quick action in an active shooter situation (he based his view on a building tour). Lynchburg City Schools said its safety measures remain strong and detailed security assessments are kept confidential (including three-year police reviews and regular drills). The News & Advance
- ➤ Lynchburg city council and the school board joint committee passed motions on March 18 to recommend converting T.C. Miller Elementary School for Innovation into a pre-K center for fall and to not build a new school in the next five years. Officials said the plan is part of a phased initiative to consolidate programs and improve efficiency, with further recommendations to be discussed at an April 3 meeting at City Hall—continuing efforts to optimize school facilities.
