COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Temporary street closures will occur on Saturday, April 5 for the Point of Honor 5K Race and Spring Fling event and on Sunday, April 6 for the Loop Run—affecting streets such as Jefferson, Ninth, and Bedford at scheduled times from early morning to mid-afternoon. Motorists and emergency vehicles should use alternate routes during the closures.  City of Lynchburg
  • At The Summit retirement community in Wyndhurst, a major expansion is underway that will add 18 new cottages, two hybrid home buildings and a state-of-the-art wellness center with a saltwater pool. A recent tour gave future residents a look at the changes and move-ins are expected later June or July as expanded dining and social spaces open by January 2027.  The News & Advance

  • Authorities said a man died in a motorcycle crash—investigators are checking what caused it.  WDBJ7

CRIME NEWS

  • A jury was selected on March 31, 2025 in Bedford County for the trial of North Carolina man Trenton Frye, accused of first-degree murder for strangling his ex-girlfriend Katlyn Lyon Montgomery after she was found unresponsive on Madison View Drive in Forest in October 2022—opening statements will follow.  WDBJ7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Virginia Cooperative Extension warned that hybrid fire ant mounds will grow quickly on farms if they are not removed soon—one mound can become many and harm equipment, animals and people. The department said soil that touches hay, produce and flowers must be inspected early to keep the spread from worsening.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Virginia Department of Transportation started a study to make the I-81 corridor better by asking drivers to share traffic and safety problems—people can give feedback using an interactive map until April 15. The study team will use this input to plan changes in summer and fall and finish the plan by the end of 2025.  WDBJ7

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, Denny Hamlin ended a 10-year winless streak at Martinsville Speedway by holding off teammate Christopher Bell to secure a playoff spot. He recorded his 55th career victory—snapping a 31-race winless run at Dover.  WDBJ7
  • Bedford County and Lynchburg hosted a world disc golf tournament last summer — drawing top players and thousands of fans — and now will co-host more pro events next year and in 2028.  The News & Advance
