BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wawa celebrated its groundbreaking on Tuesday, April 1 on Wards Rd in Campbell County as it begins building its first store in central Virginia after 20 years. Company officials said the store will open before the end of the year with an investment of over $7 million (employing nearly 115 contractors and hiring 35 workers).  WSET
  • Wawa broke ground today on new stores in Lynchburg and Staunton as part of its I-81 corridor expansion—expected to add 6 to 8 locations with over $7 million invested per store and create local jobs through 100+ contractors and 35-50 hires per site.  WSLS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the trial of Trenton Frye, accused of killing his ex-girlfriend Katlyn Lyon Montgomery in 2022, continued in Bedford County when her roommate Jacob Piercy testified about finding her strangled and his attempt to save her while the defense questioned his role—trial proceedings will finish Thursday.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Lynchburg Fire Department announced Captain Thomas E. (Eddie) Campbell is retiring after 46 years and 6 months of service to the community. He joined the department in 1978 and the department expressed its thanks for his long career dedicated to Lynchburg.  WFXR TV
  • The City of Lynchburg’s Registrar’s Office is seeking registered voters to serve as Election Officers at assigned precincts beginning with the Tuesday, June 17 Dual Primary Election. The paid positions will require work from 5:00 a.m. until after 7:00 p.m., and training is provided (apply by contacting Betty Gibbs or the Registrar’s Office if you are not yet registered to vote).  City of Lynchburg
  • Beginning today and continuing through Tuesday, April 8, Lynchburg Water Resources crews will close the westbound lane on Pearl Street between Main and Church and a lane on Church Street from Pearl to Washington on weekdays when weather permits to repair a sewer main and install water and sewer services—residents and emergency vehicles will have access at all times.  City of Lynchburg
