COMMUNITY NEWS

  • K9 Trucker from the Halifax County Sheriff's Office died at 1:30 a.m. on Apr. 1 after multiple surgeries for a medical emergency; his handler Cpl Garber remembered his loyal partnership (he helped apprehend a suspect on Mar. 2).  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger signed several school safety bills on Thursday, April 2, including one that allows school boards to equip teachers with wearable panic buttons to alert law enforcement in emergencies at school. The legislation also aims to reduce youth violence and support mental health.  WSET

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Milling and paving work is set to begin today on Trents Ferry Road from Boonsboro Road to Gorman Drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Tuesday; through traffic will be detoured via Gorman Drive + emergency vehicles will keep access.  WSLS 10
  • Lynchburg area lawmakers oppose ending Virginia’s sales and use tax exemption for data centers. They said the tax break supports local tech investments and helps sustain regional economic growth.  The News & Advance
  • Greater Lynchburg Transit Company board voted to suspend Sunday bus service in Lynchburg, effective May 3, with the last run on April 26 — citing a 20% driver shortage. The board will review staffing every 90 days and plans to resume service after training new drivers.  WDBJ7
