CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Lynchburg police reported that on March 26 a five-month-old baby was found unresponsive at a Leesville Road home and later warrants showed he was malnourished with open sores on his skin — his 23-year-old mother has been charged with multiple counts of felony child neglect after leaving him unattended for days. - ➤ A defendant from Greensboro accused of the strangulation death of his ex testified Thursday that he was at the Bedford County complex at the time of her injury and did not enter the Forest apartment where she was found unresponsive. The trial in Bedford Circuit Court continued as the jury heard closing arguments Friday and began deliberating a verdict. The News & Advance
- ➤ The Trenton Frye murder trial entered its fifth day today after Frye testified on day four — jurors are expected to decide if he is guilty of first or second degree murder. WSLS 10

- ➤ The Downtown Lynchburg Association announced Friday it was selected for a national program to boost Main Street support and will receive a $70K grant to create new downtown investment opportunities — the initiative will provide technical assistance to transform vacant storefronts and is one of only six chosen nationwide. The program, led by Main Street America and funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, aims to revitalize underused areas. WSET

- ➤ At a school board meeting Tuesday, Interim Superintendent Ben Copeland outlined a plan to repurpose T.C. Miller as a pre-K center starting next year, a change that will combine programs and save $1 million. Several parents and community members voiced concerns about losing the school’s long-held identity — and a public hearing is set for April 8 at 5 p.m. at 915 Court St. for further discussion. - ➤ The Public Works Department said a water and sewer project on Peace Street led to road closure concerns at the 501/221 intersection and work will resume next week in the evenings to ease traffic. Director Hart confirmed that Peace Street remains open & current plans include two right-hand turn lanes onto 221 with the project expected to finish by 2030 or 2031 as traffic needs are considered for upcoming developments. - ➤ A joint city council and school board committee finalized six recommendations last Thursday after reviewing 45 proposals to adjust the city’s capital improvement plan and school operations. The recommendations include reversing funding schedules, prioritizing repairs to E.C. Glass High School track, requiring consultation before changing the school CIP plan, fully funding the school’s operational fund, considering closing a second elementary school in 2026—2027, and meeting quarterly for cost-saving ideas.
