COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Miller Home for Girls is celebrating 150 years and will move to a new building planned to be about 3,500 square feet—creating a more homey space for the eight girls it serves. Executive Director Stacy Garrett said the exact location is not public and that a fundraising drive, including a campaign for 150 donations of $150, will be announced throughout 2025.  WSET
  • On Thursday, Mission BBQ donated a check to the Lynchburg Police Foundation—supporting its Helping Hands program that aids officers in need—and the police said the donation strengthens local support.  WSET

CRIME NEWS

  • A 24-year-old man was held without bond after Lynchburg police received a call at 12:51 p.m. Friday about a bomb threat at a downtown business and evacuated and searched the building, finding no explosive device.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Tuesday, April 15, milling and paving operations will resume on Rivermont Avenue near Rowland Drive at The Cavalier Store and continue to Oakwood Place for about two weeks from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays if weather permits—traffic will be limited to one lane in both directions with flagging at residential intersections and emergency vehicles maintaining access.  City of Lynchburg
  • The Blue Ridge Parkway will close from milepost 95.9 at Montvale Overlook to milepost 106 near U.S. Route 460 on April 14 for repaving and rehabilitation—travelers will be directed along Highway 43 through Bedford and Route 460 north of Vinton. The $75 million project will also involve additional closures between mileposts 106 and 121 with work expected to finish in Fall 2026.  WSLS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • 3-year-old Axel Cunningham was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor after a month of head and neck pain led to surgery in mid-March—he will begin radiation treatments at Sibley Memorial later this month. The Brookville Timberlake Fire Department and his family ask for prayers as Axel faces further care including chemotherapy.  WSET
  • Authorities confirmed that a stray cat submitted for testing on April 10 was positive for rabies after it was found on West Monitor Road near Poorhouse Farm Road in Amherst. The Amherst County Health Department urged anyone who may have been exposed by a bite, scratch or contact with saliva to consult a doctor promptly.  WDBJ7
