ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Early Tuesday morning, Lynchburg officials reported an accident on the 1900 block of Grace Street near Guggenheimer Nursing Home that led to a power pole/line down and a road closure—drivers are urged to use alternate routes. WSET
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Teresa Proffitt pleaded guilty to one felony embezzlement count in Lynchburg after misappropriating over $2.6 million from Davis-Frost between January 1, 2018 and May 31, 2023 — sentencing is scheduled for October 1 at 1:30 p.m. — WSET
- ➤ A Lynchburg man pleaded guilty to felony homicide in Circuit Court on Monday for the January 2022 death of his two-month-old daughter— the medical examiner said she died from systematic child abuse. The News & Advance
- ➤ An Amherst County grand jury indicted a Madison Heights man on April 8 on second-degree murder charges for an incident in September 2024. The News & Advance
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Construction crews in downtown Lynchburg have raised the first steel hoop for the new Riverfront Park amphitheater as part of the Downtown 2040 Plan—project leaders expect the venue to host larger performers and more community events. The project will be completed by spring 2026. WSLS 10
- ➤ Federal tax returns were due April 15—several Virginia counties and cities have until May 1 to file their state returns. Liberty Tax in Lynchburg advised residents and small business owners to start filing quickly to avoid IRS red flags. WSET
- ➤ Gov. Glenn Youngkin has issued a flag order in commemoration of the 32 lives lost in the Virginia Tech mass shooting—ordering U.S. and Virginia flags to be flown at half-staff on state and local buildings and grounds. The flags will be lowered at sunrise—remaining at half-staff until sunset. WSLS 10
- ➤ All City businesses with more than $150,000 in gross receipts must obtain a license by May 1, with fees calculated based on business type (retail, contractor, service, or wholesale) and state income taxes also due by that day. The Commissioner of the Revenue Office in City Hall offers free tax assistance when citizens bring a complete Federal return, W2s, and supporting documents without requiring an appointment.
