EDUCATION NEWS

  • School leaders requested an extra $4.5 million in local funding during a Tuesday meeting at the IT Building on Young Place, while the city is considering adding $2.1 million to support staff raises and supplies. Council members also discussed using (one time funds) to cover planned program upgrades.  WSET

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers with Revive Lynchburg use the iNaturalist app to track and remove invasive plants — a key step to protect local species and teach the public about nearby ecosystems.  WSET
  • The USDA designated 24 Virginia localities as drought disaster areas (including Franklin, Grayson and Halifax counties) to help offset crop losses. Farmers in these areas have eight months to apply for emergency loans through the USDA Farm Service Agency.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An audit by the Postal Service Inspector General found issues at the Lynchburg post office that have delayed mail, caused scanning and security problems & building maintenance concerns. The Postal Service agrees with the report and is working to fix the problems with timelines in place, officials said.  WSET
  • Governor Abigail Spanberger ordered all state and local flags to be lowered to half-staff today to honor Virginia Tech victims, with flags lowered at sunrise and maintained until sunset. The order commemorates survivors, families (and the tech community).  WDBJ7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Experts warn that Asian needle ants are steadily spreading into Virginia and can give painful stings that may cause swelling and nausea — residents should use gloves when handling rotting logs and leaf litter.  WSET
  • April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Carilion is offering a forensic nurse examiner program to better train local clinicians + improve support for survivors. The training emphasizes proper evidence collection as part of a health initiative.  WDBJ7
