COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources restocked Ivy Creek at Peaks View Park with 200 pounds of trout to launch its summer program for local anglers (ages 15 and younger). The department will restock the site again before June 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  WSET

CULTURE NEWS

  • Patrick Henry’s Red Hill will mark the U.S. Semiquincentennial by honoring the Founding Father’s role in 250 years of independence. The site plans events that invite visitors to reflect on its historical significance in the community.  The News & Advance
  • Anne Spencer House & Garden Museum marked its 50th anniversary Saturday by opening a new visitor center with the Pop’s Chicken House Stage and patio for tours and events. The museum, preserving the historic home of poet Anne Spencer, is open daily from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.  WSET

EDUCATION NEWS

  • HUD Secretary Scott Turner will serve as the keynote speaker at Liberty University's 2026 commencement ceremony (school announced this week). His address is expected to inspire students and highlight federal housing efforts.  The News & Advance

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lynchburg City Council and the school board met last week to review the FY27 budget and discuss student performance and discipline. They considered changes to school funding to address achievement gaps (focusing on measurable improvements).  The News & Advance

HEALTH NEWS

  • Centra Health will build a hybrid emergency and urgent care center at Timberlake Road and Logans Lane to ease strain on Lynchburg General Hospital; construction will start by year-end and the center is expected to open in 12-18 months.  Cardinal News
