ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A privately owned Mooney M20E belly-landed at Lynchburg Regional Airport on Wednesday shortly before 7 p.m. when its landing gear did not deploy—no one was hurt and the plane had minimal damage as Virginia State Police, the FAA, and the National Transportation Safety Board begin investigating.  WSLS 10

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Maple Leaf Tea Room on Commerce St. in downtown Lynchburg opened Tuesday, April 22 and offers a mix of Canadian and British dishes, including traditional tea and pub food. Co-owner Cheryl Carter, who worked at the former Ploughcroft Tea Room, said they may extend hours in the future—continuing a cherished local tradition.  WSET

CRIME NEWS

  • Lynchburg police are investigating the death of Avriel Hooks, who was reported missing on August 23 and found in Amherst County, while her estranged husband Michael Lee Perry the Third, now in the Blue Ridge Detention Center, will speak exclusively to ABC 13 on April 28 at 6 p.m.—he claims he is innocent.  WSET

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lynchburg’s nonprofit museum Amazement Square got a letter on April 10 that it will not receive nearly $82,000 in federal funds for its STEAM Library Makers and Everyone Is Special programs—free services for underserved groups—and now it depends on community help to keep them running.  WFXR TV
  • The University of Lynchburg is adding nine-week online Cannabis Studies certificate courses with partner Green Flower to prepare students for jobs in cultivation, manufacturing and retail. The school plans to offer shorter, more affordable classes as it gets ready for possible industry growth when state and federal policies change.  WFXR TV
  • High school students and teachers from Campbell County Public Schools shared the impact of the Teachers for Tomorrow program at Monday’s board meeting, which gives students seven college credits from the University of Lynchburg and practical classroom experience—helping to build pathways for future educators. The program, active for over a decade and now offered at all four high schools in the district, continues to guide students in exploring a career in teaching.  The News & Advance

  • Lynchburg Police have updated their badge design to honor the department's long legacy—paying tribute to local landmarks from Monument Terrace to the Old Courthouse. The new design reflects the team's ongoing dedication to community service.  WDBJ7
  • Tuesday night, Lynchburg City Council held public hearings at City Hall on the proposed property tax rate, water rate, and fiscal 2026 budget; residents urged a tax reduction while council members debated motions to lower the rate further—no vote occurred and a decision is expected at the next meeting on May 13 or at a special session before then. The smooth session contrasted with a delayed hearing two years ago due to a bomb threat.  The News & Advance
