- ➤ Salt of the Earth Childcare opened at 1891 Humankind Way to serve Lynchburg families with care for children aged 2½ to under 5 — the center has three classrooms for 15 children each, is open weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at a cost of $250 per week and uses pen and paper lessons to prepare kids for school. Owner Rosalind Walker said the program is designed for working parents, single moms, and single dads. WSET

- ➤ United Way of Central Virginia lost a $283,000 AmeriCorps grant that was set to fund staffing for a new child care center and expand services at early learning sites—forcing a delay in support for more than 500 children and families.
