COMMUNITY NEWS

  • WSLS 10 Shred will be at the Berglund Center on Saturday, May 30, from 8 a.m. to noon. Visitors must use the Rutherford Entrance near McDonald’s and Virginia Credit Union to safely dispose of sensitive documents and donate canned goods for Feeding Southwest Virginia.  WSLS 10
  • Seventeen new recruits graduated from the Lynchburg Fire Department Recruit Academy on Monday, May 4, and they are now preparing to serve the community (a milestone for local emergency services).  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Needle Ninja — a new sewing and crafting studio — opened downtown yesterday on Main Street, offering classes, open studio times, and hourly machine rentals for locals to learn and create.  WSET
  • Fork in the Alley is set to host its 21st Forkapalooza with local food vendors and live music—an exciting opportunity for residents to enjoy diverse flavors and community spirit. The event will take place soon at a well-loved local venue.  WDBJ7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rising gasoline prices are increasing food transport costs for local stores and restaurants. Businesses report delivery charges doubling from $5 to $10 and experts caution that households may face higher food costs as the trend continues.  WSET

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia University of Lynchburg celebrated its Class of 2026 on Saturday during its 136th commencement ceremony, with the Rev. Albert Sampson addressing graduates.  The News & Advance
  • Bedford County Public Schools is considering moving Westyn Village students from Forest Elementary to Otter River Elementary to ease overcrowding. Parents, teachers, and students may attend a meeting (on Thursday) to share input, and the board will vote on the plan on June 11.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews in Lynchburg are nearly done blasting the Blackwater CSO Tunnel with about 700 feet of rock left, and the excavation will finish in July while work on the underground facility will follow before full project completion in July 2027.  WSET

HEALTH NEWS

  • May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month, and the Central Shenandoah Health District warns residents to protect against ticks by using EPA-registered repellents and treating clothing with permethrin. Health director Xavier Crocket says checking for ticks upon returning indoors can help prevent Lyme disease.  WSLS 10
