COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hundreds of community members gathered on May 2 at Riverfront Park to celebrate the opening of the Kiwanis Centennial Riverfront Playground—the first fully accessible playground in Lynchburg. City leaders and local groups partnered to fund and build the new park, which features a multi-level climber, inclusive swings, and sensory play zones for children of all abilities.  City of Lynchburg

CRIME NEWS

  • Police are investigating a shooting that occurred in Lynchburg on May 5 (officials said details remain limited) as they review evidence.  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Scrappy Elephant, a creative reuse store at 829 Main St, opened in April in downtown Lynchburg to offer low-cost, recycled art supplies for local teachers, artists and crafters—items donated by the community that change weekly. The pop-up will run through September and plans to move to a permanent space later this year—where it will add art classes, studio space and a rewards program for local nonprofits.  The News & Advance

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Virginia Department of Transportation announced a $64 million project to improve the Candlers Mountain interchange by replacing the bridge and adding new acceleration and deceleration lanes on the Lynchburg Expressway. The work will start in spring 2026 and finish in spring 2029—repair crews will work overnight from May 18 to July 1 on the eastbound side of the bridge to extend its lifespan.  WSET

HEALTH NEWS

  • LewisGale Midwives celebrated their 5-year anniversary on April 2 and have grown their midwifery care in the Roanoke and New River valleys over the past five years—providing 24/7 help with labor and birth so that women can choose a more natural care plan. They offer longer prenatal visits and let doulas support births, which meets a rising demand for non-traditional birth options.  WSLS 10
