- ➤ Dr. Owen Cardwell, a respected leader who fought for justice by integrating E.C. Glass High School, died at 78. He served as a pastor+educator at the University of Lynchburg, and his funeral will be held Saturday, May 24 as the community honors his lasting legacy. WSET

- ➤ Lynchburg will host its 40th Annual Batteau Festival this June with batteau rides on June 11 at Riveredge Park, a launch party on June 13 at Percival’s Island, and a guided 10-mile kayak trip on June 14 from the Miller Center—each event honoring the James River’s rich heritage. Registration for age-specific rides and the kayak trip is required ahead of the festival. City of Lynchburg
- ➤ Lynchburg native Virgil Moore, a Juilliard student, will perform at the Academy Center of the Arts on Saturday as part of this weekend's events. State parks will celebrate National Kids Day and Dunbar Theatre will stage Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella over the weekend. The News & Advance

- ➤ City officials released the 2025 Water Quality Report which shows Lynchburg’s drinking water exceeds federal and state safety standards. The report is included in May utility bills, available online and at local offices — it also notes that Lynchburg Water Resources earned the Virginia Department of Health’s Excellence in Waterworks Performance award for 20 consecutive years. - ➤ The City of Lynchburg will host an informational meeting on May 29th at 4:00 p.m. (at Oakwood Country Club, 3409 Boonsboro Road) to explain plans for improving the Link Road and US 501 Business intersection with a new right-turn lane, sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and a replaced traffic signal. Residents may drop in until 6:00 p.m. to view the plans, ask questions, and share feedback. City of Lynchburg
- ➤ During Tuesday's city council meeting in Lynchburg, Mayor Taylor and Councilman Misjuns clashed over alleged fraud emails and proposals for a closed session to review council conduct—both sides exchanged accusations about staff intimidation and disruption before a brief recess was called. WSET
- ➤ The Lynchburg Police Department held a memorial service Monday — honoring police officers who died in the line of duty over the past year — to remember their sacrifice. The News & Advance
- ➤ Milling and paving work is underway on 15th Street from Monroe to Grace and on Jackson Street from 14th to 16th from May 14 until May 21 between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.—traffic is limited to one lane with flaggers guiding vehicles while on-street parking is banned and emergency vehicles have access. - ➤ Lynchburg midwife Katie Page from Centra Medical Group Women’s Center led a push for a law signed by Gov. Youngkin on May 2—this law means private insurers and Medicaid will pay midwives the same as certified nurse midwives for identical services and will take effect on July 1. The move supports Lynchburg’s strong midwifery practice and is expected to broaden care options for mothers. The News & Advance
