COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ticket reservations for the 2025 St. Jude Dream Home giveaway are now open in Lynchburg with tickets costing $100 (all funds benefit St. Jude's work to help children). The Dream Home, built by LG Flint on Elmwood Avenue in Blackwater Run, is worth about $580,000 and has 3,000 square feet, four bedrooms and three and a half baths (other prizes include two $10,000 VISA gift cards and a 2025 Kubota Sidekick).  WSET
  • Lynchburg community hosted the Swing for Cash Golf Classic at London Downs Golf Club to honor teen Cash Gaudio, who was tragically shot in his driveway last year and would have turned 20 tomorrow. Twenty-eight teams of four played as family—friends and local organizers raised funds for the Live Like Cash Gaudio Foundation to support student-athletes with scholarships.  WSET

  • Campbell County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to help locate Gino Anthony Ortiz, who is wanted for grand larceny after posing as a Virginia Lottery Agent—he was last seen with a military-style haircut and a Tennessee Titans jersey while accessing gaming machines and cashing stolen winning tickets in Lynchburg.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lynchburg City Schools announced its new superintendent, Dr. Kristy Somerville—Midgette, on May 20th while interim superintendent Dr. Benjamin Copeland will lead until she takes charge on July 1. The district also revealed that teachers will receive bonus amounts—$750 for full-timers and $375 for part-timers—on June 15th.  WSET

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Liberty University agreed to pay former president Jerry Falwell Jr. $15 million as a settlement reached last summer (including $5.5 million for lawsuits and nearly $10 million from his retirement package) after his resignation, ending the legal disputes between them.  WSET

HEALTH NEWS

  • St. Jude Children's Research Hospital helped local girl Anna fight a life-threatening brain tumor by providing 33 rounds of free proton therapy in Memphis—covering the costs of food, lodging, treatment, and medication. In 2023, doctors declared her cancer free and she now returns every five years for follow-up care.  WSET
