Over 300 Lynchburg residents took part in the annual Memorial Day 10K Run & 2 Mile Walk on May 26th to honor those who gave their lives for freedom.

The event brought families and individuals together in a record turnout that celebrated the spirit of remembrance.

On Saturday, hundreds gathered at Diamond Hill Baptist Church to celebrate the life of Rev.

Dr. Owen Cardwell Jr., a respected pastor, professor and civil rights activist who died on May 12. His legacy—built on school integration and community service—will guide others in Lynchburg as they honor his memory.

On Memorial Day, local veterans and community members gathered at Monument Terrace to honor fallen service members with a tribute that included six and eight bell tolls—symbolic of a sailor's watch ending—and a turned-over glass ceremony.

The Lynchburg Downtown Business Coalition put out dozens of flags on downtown flag poles over the weekend to honor those who served and sacrificed for freedom—Main Street displays from 12th to 5th and 9th Street displays from Church to Jefferson will remain in place until Independence Day.

Poor weather on Monday did not stop friends, families and veterans from gathering at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery to honor local heroes on Memorial Day.

The ceremony offered wreaths for each military branch—over 1,000 American flags were placed at graves to mark their sacrifice.

Dozens of flags were put on display around downtown Lynchburg to honor veterans who served and sacrificed for freedom over the weekend.

The flags are arranged along Main Street—12th to 5th and along 9th Street from Church to Jefferson, and they will remain until Independence Day in July.

Taps was played at the end of the Memorial Day observance at Monument Terrace in Lynchburg on Monday—marking a day of remembrance for local service members.

Starting July 1, every vehicle passenger in Virginia must wear a seatbelt and adults not buckled in will be ticketed—Christy King pushed the law after her son died in a 2020 crash while state officials prepare for heavy travel on Memorial Day weekend.

Today at Lynchburg City Hall, the council will vote on the real estate tax rate for fiscal 2026 and consider a proposal to raise the hotel tax—city management wants to keep the rate at 89 cents per $100 while some citizens suggest lowering it to keep bills steady.

The meeting also includes a finance committee review and a council work session on federal community grant spending.
