COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Virginia non-profit called Reel Connections for Kids held its annual fishing event on Smith Mountain Lake on May 31 where about a dozen families fished with expert guides. Greg Bratton’s sons, including his wheelchair-bound son Chase who caught his first striped bass, enjoyed a morning that created lasting memories — a cherished moment for local families.  WFXR TV
  • The City of Lynchburg ended a nearly seven-month community process for the White Rock Community Hub with events on May 30 and May 31, where residents and partners saw plans to turn the old White Rock Elementary School into a hub for a library, tech lab, kitchen, food pantry, and more — all while keeping the building historic and accessible. Work Program Architects and the Commonwealth Preservation Group led the plan to meet local needs in health, learning, and work.  City of Lynchburg
  • Blue Ridge Food Bank and USDA are partnering to provide meals for hungry kids at 25 locations in Central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley this summer—food is available through the Summer Food Service Program.  The News & Advance
  • Miller Home for Girls is celebrating 150 years of service as it supports girls aged 4 through 21 and will move from its 20,000-square-foot facility on Westerly Drive to a new home under 4,000 square feet that feels more like a traditional house. Executive Director Stacy Garrett said the move, planned over the summer for the new school year, will sustain the home’s longstanding mission—supported by community donations and local figures like country music star Phil Vassar.  The News & Advance

  • The Monacan Indian Nation is hosting its 32nd annual powwow to celebrate Native traditions—featuring traditional dance, music and crafts that highlight indigenous culture and community heritage.  The News & Advance

  • GasBuddy found that average gasoline prices in Virginia fell by 7.5 cents per gallon over the past week and averaged $2.94 per gallon on Monday — the survey showed prices ranged from $2.39 to $3.99 and noted a drop of 8.5 cents since last month.  WSET

  • The Virginia DMV warns customers about a text scam in which fraudsters pose as the agency and claim unpaid fines will lead to suspension of licenses and registrations. The DMV said texts with links may steal personal data — customers should use official contact methods.  WSET
