- ➤ Families in Southwest and Central Virginia are planning for summer with youth programs that include educational camps and outdoor adventures in Lynchburg, Roanoke, and the New River Valley—offering different activities for various age groups. WSLS 10

- ➤ Shipley's Do-Nuts opened its first Virginia location today at 8004 Timberlake Road in Lynchburg—offering both fresh sweet donuts and savory breakfast options made on site. General Manager Michael Espinoza said the shop will operate daily from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. to serve local donut lovers. WSET
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Lynchburg City School Board approved a new budget that gives teachers raises and benefits, including a 3% increase across the board, a starting salary of $50,000 and an hourly raise from $15 to $17 at its Tuesday night meeting. Interim Superintendent Ben Copeland said the plan provides one substitute per building and depends on City Council approving an extra $2.7 million by June 30—if not, the board will consider amendments. - ➤ Lynchburg City Schools is joining the USDA Summer Food Service Program to offer free meals to children at various community sites from June 9 to Aug. 6—meals are served on a first-come, first-served basis with children required to stay onsite while eating. WDBJ7

- ➤ The city of Lynchburg will spend $12.2 million to build a 15-foot roundabout, two crosswalks and extra sidewalks at the intersection of Langhorne Road and Vassar Street, where eight crashes have occurred since 2020. A public hearing is set for June 26 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Linkhorne Middle School and construction will start in February 2028. WSET
- ➤ Virginia lawmakers including Senator Creigh Deeds, Senators Mark Warner and Kaine criticized the Labor Department for pausing 99 Job Corps centers, saying the move will hurt training for vulnerable young people and put rural areas at risk of losing vital workforce support — officials are now planning how to address the gap.
