COMMUNITY NEWS

  • CASA of Central Virginia said 117 children in its area — including those in Lynchburg, Appomattox, Amherst, Bedford, Campbell and Nelson counties — are waiting for volunteer advocates to help them in the court system. The organization will hold its next information session on June 14 in Lynchburg to train volunteers on supporting these children.  WDBJ7
  • On June 6th, 2025, community members in Lynchburg gathered to remember the Bedford Boys during the 81st anniversary of D-Day. Leaders and veterans shared stories of the soldiers’ bravery in a touching tribute—underscoring the town’s deep connection to its history.  WDBJ7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Old Dominion Job Corps center in Monroe is closing after nearly 50 years, leaving over 130 employees and 78 students, including 22 from Lynchburg, in need of new jobs and training as federal plans to pause centers run by contractors lead to an orderly transition. Virginia Career Works is enrolling affected students into Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act programs and is coordinating with local colleges to match skills with job openings—efforts that will help ease the changeover.  The News & Advance

  • The Lynchburg NAACP is urging the school board to reverse its 6-1 decision to bar longtime advocate Danny McCain from speaking at future meetings after he exceeded his allotted time at the June 3 meeting; NAACP president JoAnn Martin warned the move could limit community engagement on issues like the achievement gap.  The News & Advance

  • Lynchburg City Council will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, June 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall (900 Church Street) to review a proposed ordinance that will raise ambulance and related service rates and add a new charge for Advanced Practice Paramedic Treatment Administration. The ordinance is available for review in the Office of the Clerk of Council (Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) and questions may be directed to Alicia Finney at 434.455.3990.  City of Lynchburg
