COMMUNITY NEWS

  • SML Marine Volunteer Fire And Rescue paused its boat dock project on June 18 and is asking local donors to help cover costs—officials say the contributions will buy materials and support labor needed to resume the work. The organization hopes the community’s support will restart the project soon.  WDBJ7

CRIME NEWS

  • Keon Palmer was sentenced on June 18 to 75 years in prison (23 years suspended) for first-degree murder and firearm charges for the killing of 19-year-old Makayvia Cabell in Lynchburg, and he must serve 55 active years in prison.  WSET
  • Mary “Elizabeth” Bryant Corbett was sentenced on Tuesday to two years in jail for involuntary manslaughter after a July 2021 crash in Bedford killed her boyfriend — she is also on probation for three years with her license suspended indefinitely.  The News & Advance
  • Early Sunday, June 15, police deployed tear gas on a disorderly crowd near a food truck on 13th St. and Commerce St. in downtown Lynchburg after gunshots were heard — they later released two individuals after recovering cartridge casings that did not link them to the shooting.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials said Concord Turnpike is now open to traffic after crews repaired a sinkhole in front of 1801 Concord Turnpike. The roadway had been closed since May 30 and repair work was completed on Tuesday — restoring safe passage for motorists.  WSET
  • Lynchburg Vice Mayor and Ward III Councilman Curt Diemer said he was floored when he learned the real estate tax rate might jump from 89 cents to $1.025 per $100—an increase that could hit homeowners, the elderly and low-income residents hard. City Council will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Monday at City Hall to collect public input on the proposal, which also calls for eliminating the car tax on vehicles valued at $20,000 or less.  The News & Advance

  • Lynchburg native Isaiah Bradner won the largest Pokémon trading card tournament in New Orleans with over 4,000 players, earning $25,000, rare cards, and the Pikachu Championship Trophy. At 21, he will compete in the Pokémon World Championships in Anaheim this August after playing in Honolulu, Yokohama and London.  WSLS 10
