Residents gathered at Miller Park to celebrate Juneteenth and mark the end of slavery — the 25th annual event featured local vendors, songs and historical reenactments while speakers stressed the need to remember past struggles and work toward equality.

Pierre Daura—a renowned painter and art professor who arrived in Lynchburg in 1939 due to disruptions in Europe—taught at Lynchburg College and Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, and his work in painting, sculpture and engraving continues to be celebrated in local museums.

Today, Lynchburg City Council votes on proposals to raise the real estate tax rate and lower or eliminate the vehicle tax—steps taken after property reassessments that could add about $2 million to next fiscal year's revenues.

The council will meet again Tuesday at 7 p.m. to vote on the new budget and utility rate changes and to discuss new rules for public comment.
