- ➤ Today, intense heat and humidity hit Lynchburg, Roanoke, and Clifton Forge as local cooling centers open for relief — hours vary by center. In Lynchburg, services at the Public Library (Main and Downtown), Department of Human Services, Miller Center, and Salvation Army provide safe spaces, while centers in Roanoke and Clifton Forge will offer similar access. - ➤ Lynchburg Grows’ second Camp Grows summer camp now runs for three weeks and welcomes more than 30 campers who learn to plant, harvest, and cook vegetables while discussing food equity—teaching them about nutrition, food insecurity, and community support. The program is funded by the Lynchburg Community Foundation and Mustaches for Kids and is offered on a sliding scale from $5 to $200. The News & Advance

- ➤ City of Lynchburg hired McCormick Taylor, Inc. in partnership with VDOT to design and build the busy US 501/US 221 intersection to ease congestion, improve safety, and support future growth. A public meeting is set for Tuesday, July 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Fire Station 7 on Lakeside Drive—residents can call the toll-free hotline for project updates. City of Lynchburg
- ➤ Lynchburg held a public hearing Monday night at City Hall where residents and councilmembers discussed a plan to raise the real estate tax rate to $1.025 per $100 of assessed value and remove the car tax on vehicles valued at $20,000 or less. Councilmembers shared mixed views as the city raced to meet a June 30 deadline to approve a fiscal year 2026 budget—supporters said the plan would ease tax burdens while opponents warned it might worsen costs.
