Amherst County’s Ankida Ridge Vineyards — a small family-run winery on a remote mountaintop — has been named one of Daily Meal's 12 Best Wineries Across America in 2026.

On Wednesday, the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation awarded a $100,000 grant to Appomattox County High School’s agriculture program to support a new 12,000 sqft complex behind the school (a key step toward the school’s $1.2 million goal to expand hands-on learning for future agricultural leaders).

Summer testing at Smith Mountain Lake from samples collected the week ending June 6 showed slight improvements in water clarity and safe recreational conditions, with bacteria levels within state guidelines as confirmed by the lake association and Ferrum College.

At a June 16 meeting with Franklin County supervisors, Appalachian Power said Smith Mountain Lake remains near 790 feet with levels about five feet below normal, prompting drought trigger points under its Water Management Plan.

The company will work with agencies & local communities as drought conditions persist.

The Lynchburg City Council appointed three people to the school board, with Jack Schewel focusing on early reading scores, Letitia Lowery continuing support for a pre-kindergarten program, and Tiersha Royal advocating for school accountability and anti-bullying measures; their three-year terms begin July 1.

Lynchburg Water Resources will begin inspecting customer-owned water service lines as part of the Pure Pipe Lynchburg program the week of July 6 to check for lead and galvanized pipes under a new Virginia law (residents will receive notice 14 days in advance and the work will cause minimal disruption).
