CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Lynchburg PD explained that a traffic stop on Jul. 3 was carried out by mistake when a license plate was misread—officials said they reviewed the error and are adjusting their procedures to prevent future mishaps. WDBJ7
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Budget cuts have forced the Lynchburg Visitor Center and Museum to change its hours—starting July 7 it will be open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sundays from 12 to 3 p.m.—while staying closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. WSET
- ➤ Due to budget cuts, the Visitor Center and Lynchburg Museum at 901 Court Street will change their hours on July 7. They will be open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and closed on Monday and Tuesday—core services remain available—so local visitors can still get tourism information. - ➤ The Lynchburg City School Board re-elected District 3 representative Atul Gupta as chair and selected District 1 representative Daryl Conner as vice chair at its reorganization meeting Tuesday evening for the 2025-26 school year. The News & Advance
- ➤ At Lynchburg City Schools board meeting Tuesday evening, Chair Atul Gupta appointed a seven-member ad hoc committee to develop solutions within 60 days to narrow the achievement gap between Black and white students—this move came as new superintendent Kristy Somerville-Midgette began her role. She outlined plans to visit schools and host a meet-and-greet at Heritage High School on July 17 as part of a phased strategy to build community relationships. The News & Advance

- ➤ Lynchburg At-large Councilman Martin Misjuns’ lawyers filed a motion Tuesday with the U.S. District Court to reopen his lawsuit over his 2021 firing from the Lynchburg Fire Department—citing over 500 pages of new evidence from April depositions that show a city manager helped approve his termination. The motion argues that this evidence supports his equal protection claim and should let the case be fully heard. The News & Advance

- ➤ Staff at the Free Clinic of Central Virginia braced for higher patient loads after a federal spending bill passed Thursday that cuts Medicaid, raising concerns about stretched resources. The clinic, which serves uninsured and underinsured residents and is operating at two temporary sites after a fire last winter, may need to make serious choices about who it can serve—its executive director warned.
