- ➤ Sheriff’s deputies ended a three-hour standoff on July 8 by using a drone & arresting a wanted man. WDBJ7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lynchburg City Schools will hold a welcoming event on July 17 for families, staff and community members to meet new superintendent Dr. Kristy Somerville-Midgette; she started on July 1. The event takes place at Heritage High School (3101 Wards Ferry Road) (4 p.m. to 6 p.m.) as guests prepare for the upcoming school year. WSET
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ More than a dozen members of the Lynchburg Fire Department’s Swiftwater Rescue Team were sent to Halifax County on Tuesday when officials declared a state of emergency for flooding—Virginia State Police are also providing aerial support. Off-duty firefighters are covering gaps at local stations as the department said the duration of the deployment is yet to be determined. WSET

- ➤ Timberlake Investments LLC sued Lynchburg City Council after its rezoning application for 18 townhouses and a duplex on Wards Ferry Road was rejected while the council approved a housing project on Wiggington Road on the same night. The lawsuit claimed the council did not properly challenge Timberlake’s facts and asked the court to allow records from both projects—an action that could impact future zoning decisions.
