  • Venue Cinemas in Lynchburg announced Wednesday that it will not renew its lease at the end of October and is looking for someone to buy and operate the theater—it will stay open with regular hours until then.  WSLS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • Lynchburg police charged a 17-year-old suspect with second degree murder, shooting in the commission of murder, and robbery—charges stemming from the fatal shooting of ZayKeese Brown on May 6.  The News & Advance
  • Family and friends of ZayKeese Brown are relieved that Lynchburg Police have arrested a 17-year-old suspect in connection with his murder on May 6 at Bedford Avenue—yet they still ask why this tragedy occurred.  WSET

CULTURE NEWS

  • Elizabeth Dabney Langhorne Lewis shaped Lynchburg by teaching in local schools, helping to found the First Unitarian Church, and campaigning for women’s right to vote; her work in marching on Washington and writing for full citizenship changed local views. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, July 8, 12 members from the Lynchburg Fire Department's Swiftwater Rescue team responded to widespread flooding in Halifax County and spent nearly 10 hours helping authorities perform wellness checks on residents whose homes were isolated by rising waters—two firefighters also aided the Virginia State Police with aerial surveillance. Officials confirmed that the team was not required to perform any rescue operations during the deployment.  WSET
