- ➤ Rajan Babbar, 59, owner of Taste of India in Lynchburg, was indicted by a federal grand jury for fraud when he allegedly used false SNAP transactions to give cash for food stamp benefits — officials said he now faces charges of SNAP fraud, wire fraud, and transacting in criminally derived property. - ➤ Lynchburg City Schools superintendent Dr. Kristy Somerville-Midgette presented her five leadership goals at the school board meeting Tuesday night, focusing on student learning, operational efficiency, and community engagement—she also plans to ride bus routes to see where students live after her recent appointment in early July. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Starting Monday, July 28, Lynchburg Water Resources will work with contractor Duke’s for about two weeks during daylight hours to chemically treat approximately 16,200 linear feet of sanitary sewer pipes for root control. Residents near work sites should remove vehicles and personal items and expect minor traffic delays as crews access the sewer system. City of Lynchburg
- ➤ A General Assembly panel is studying whether switching Virginia’s odd-year elections to even years could boost voter turnout and reduce outside special-interest influence (chaired by Sen. Schuyler VanValkenburg) and would require a constitutional amendment, with the first changes expected in elections beginning in 2029 (and some local offices not changing until 2040).
