ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ At approximately 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Evington fire crews responded to a motor vehicle accident on Colonial Highway where an overturned vehicle blocked both lanes, and six people were taken to a local hospital for evaluation — the incident is under investigation by Virginia State Police. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Amherst County man Frederick Wiggington was sentenced to life in prison plus three years for murdering his wife and for concealing her body—he pleaded Alford to the concealment charge on July 30. WDBJ7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Lynchburg Master of Physician Assistant Medicine program partnered with Blue Ridge Medical Center on Tuesday — the press release noted the collaboration will expand clinical training opportunities for students. The News & Advance
- ➤ At Central Virginia Community College, more students are choosing short-term training over a four-year degree as fast-forward programs have grown over 500% in five years. Dr. Jason Ferguson said the college partners with local employers for courses like welding and cybersecurity—more space, instructors and state support will be needed to meet high demand. WFXR TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City officials hosted a meet and greet Tuesday evening at Lynchburg Fire Station 7 to reintroduce plans for improvements at the Route 501/221 intersection, a proposed $80—$90 million project by McCormick Taylor to ease congestion and improve safety. Lynchburg Public Works said the city will request construction bids in 2028 and aims to begin building in 2029 with work expected to last about three years. WSET
