  • Richard Gallaher started a campaign that places billboards with a simple message, 'UR LOVED,' along Timberlake Road to remind people they are valued—local drivers say the sign gives comfort during lonely times. CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities are investigating the in-custody death of inmate Jonathan De’Keith Poe at the Lynchburg Adult Detention Center — he was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital on Aug. 1 after a medical emergency while serving three life sentences for attempted murder and weapons charges and was pronounced dead Friday morning with his body set for an autopsy in Roanoke.  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • The News & Advance archives show Lynchburg in the 1950s when the city built new schools—like E.C. Glass High School, Preston Glenn airport, and Thomas Road Baptist Church—and recorded a deadly storm in August 1958 that took two lives.  The News & Advance

EDUCATION NEWS

  • With school days away, Lynchburg teachers can stock their classrooms for free at the Tools4Schools warehouse that offers 100 points a month using donations and grants — the online store and in-person service allow educators to get supplies and pack orders for students based on need surveys. This program helps teachers reduce their monthly expenses and prepare for the new school year.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lynchburg Water Resources crews will begin work Monday, August 11 to replace a fire hydrant and install water services on the 3200 block of Mayflower Drive—causing an eastbound lane closure from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. through Wednesday with a detour guiding traffic via Carroll Avenue, Odd Fellows Road, and Perkins Street while the westbound lane stays open.  City of Lynchburg

  • Health officials confirmed that a dead fox near 5690 Bear Creek Road near Rustburg tested positive for rabies + two dogs were seen in the area.  The News & Advance
