- ➤ Kari Jorgensen Diener, who has 25 years of food aid experience, became CEO of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank in Verona this week. She will visit its food pantries across the Shenandoah Valley and Central Virginia to help strengthen access to nutritious food. The News & Advance

- ➤ Lynchburg police arrested five wanted suspects on Aug. 10th at 6:45 p.m.—the arrests followed a coordinated investigation. WDBJ7
- ➤ Lynchburg Police arrested five wanted individuals at a residence on the 500 block of Hillside Court Sunday, August 10 — all suspects surrendered without incident. WDBJ7
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Lucy Otey—a 60-year-old widow and mother of eight—founded the Ladies Relief Hospital in 1862 to care for wounded Confederate soldiers after a harsh comment from a doctor, and she boarded a boat to Richmond to ask Confederate President Jefferson Davis for permission. Her hospital lowered death rates in Lynchburg and set a new standard for wartime care that continues to be remembered at Old City Cemetery. The News & Advance

- ➤ A back-to-school event in Lynchburg hosted by Dr. James Camm — executive director of One Community, One Voice — gave over 300 backpacks, school supplies, and shoes to local children and families. The event also featured the new superintendent and was made possible by community donations — contributed by local residents — that helped ensure students started the year prepared. WSET
- ➤ The Lynchburg City School Board today voted to change its meeting schedule—holding work sessions on the first Tuesday and regular meetings on the third Tuesday—and approved Somerville-Midgette’s RFP so a contractor will be hired through open bidding for a new strategic plan that starts in September.
