  • HumanKind’s Early Head Start Center in Hill City broke ground on an expansion that will nearly double enrollment from 48 to 90 children—adding free education and family services such as health care, case management, and nutrition.   • Old Dominion Job Corps in Amherst resumed operations nearly three months after a federal pause and is hiring new staff as it prepares to welcome five new students on Sept. 9—its background check system is now fully operational to clear a backlog of applicants.  The News & Advance

  • Chief of Police Ryan Zuidema is retiring from the Lynchburg Police Department after almost 29 years of service and will become Police Chief in Wilmington; Deputy Chief Kennith Edwards Jr.—a longtime officer—has been named interim chief as the city begins a national search.  City of Lynchburg

HEALTH NEWS

  • Horizon Health launched its third annual Back to School Yard Sign Campaign to lift student spirits across Lynchburg and surrounding counties by offering free signs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.—the signs encourage kindness and a positive start to school—while the campaign also offers simple tips for mental wellness such as reducing screen time and keeping a regular routine.  WSET
  • Good Samaritan Advanced Illness Care and Hospice has expanded its services to Lynchburg and nearby counties Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell, and part of Pittsylvania by adding home health care and dedicated hospice support for patients with life-limiting illnesses.
