ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A fire at Vinton House on Aug. 21 injured one person and a dog while displacing seven residents—firefighters responded quickly and are investigating the cause. WDBJ7
- ➤ Officials confirmed that gas was likely behind an explosion in the Glenmore subdivision Tuesday that killed a woman and injured a man — the blast flattened a house. The News & Advance
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Patricia Wiggington, the ex-wife of the man sentenced for Elsie Wiggington’s murder, appeared in an Amherst County court on August 21 where she faced charges of obstruction of justice and accessory after the fact—investigators said she moved in two days after Elsie disappeared. The judge certified her charges to Circuit Court, meaning she may face trial soon. WDBJ7
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lynchburg Water Resources, working with contractor F.L. Showalter, will repair stormwater piping along the south edge of Fort Avenue from Monday, August 25 for two to three weeks (8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays) and will redirect the northeast-bound lane while closing the adjacent bike lane and sidewalk so motorists should expect minor delays. - ➤ Nelson County is changing the oversight of its Department of Social Services because agency leaders made decisions that broke state law and left children in unsafe situations—County Administrator Candy McGarry will now directly supervise the agency’s director. WSLS 10
- ➤ The Virginia State Police will graduate 32 new troopers, including several from our region, at 10 a.m. today at the state academy in Chesterfield—each trooper completing 1,300 hours of classroom and field training since January 27. They will also spend six weeks with a field training officer to learn their patrol area. WFXR TV
