- ➤ Police arrested a man in Lynchburg after drugs+guns were recovered during a domestic violence incident that investigators linked to a homicide. WDBJ7
- ➤ Lynchburg Police arrested Victor Dale Giles, 40, on Tuesday for first-degree murder — use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and firearm possession by a convicted felon — in connection with the fatal shooting of Kasim Holmes. The News & Advance
- ➤ A man was arrested on Aug. 27 after police found drugs—and guns during a domestic violence incident in Lynchburg, and officials said he remains in custody pending further investigation. WDBJ7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Amherst County Public Schools unveiled a five-year plan to boost career and technical education across all grades with new courses, including a dental assistant program and an ag lab launching next year—aiming to strengthen local business partnerships and update equipment and staffing. The plan will add more teachers and resources to help students earn certifications and gain practical skills through 2031. The News & Advance

- ➤ Virginia residents buy $2 lottery tickets for tonight’s Powerball drawing with an $850 million jackpot—the sixth largest in the game’s history, set for 10:59 p.m.—and winners can choose a 30-year payout or a $383.7 million lump sum. WSET
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City staff found $538,118—taken from unspent department funds—to keep the Jackson Heights Art Studio, the Templeton Senior Center, and the Downtown Lynchburg Library open after budget cuts threatened their future. Lynchburg officials said they will report later on the savings used to support these popular community spaces. WSET
- ➤ Several families in Ward One raised concerns at a Lynchburg City Council meeting about a Sobrius halfway house on Mimosa Drive that opened three months ago—neighbors claim eight men live there, which they say violates city occupancy rules and threatens local safety. City Manager Wynter Benda and Councilwoman Jacqueline Timmer are working with state officials to review the lease and ordinance issues. WSET

- ➤ Developers George and Tinker Burkhardt plan to start construction next month on 709 Fifth St.—a project to revive a historic African American corridor by creating mixed-use spaces with both market and affordable rents.
