- ➤ Today the Bedford County Fair Horse and Livestock Show is underway at Allen’s Mountain Livestock at 2673 Timber Ridge Road—gates open at 8 a.m. and the horse show begins at 9:30 a.m. featuring classes such as model, English and western; on Sunday the youth livestock show will start at 8 a.m. with young exhibitors showcasing cattle, sheep, goats and swine for free admission. - ➤ A Nelson County judge certified charges against Ethan Garfield and Autumn Woods on Thursday for the homicide and child abuse of their 6-week-old son Cyrus—sending the cases to a grand jury in Nelson Circuit Court on Sept. 23. The News & Advance
- ➤ On August 29, the final suspect in a pawn shop break-in was sentenced — ending a months-long police investigation in the area. WDBJ7
- ➤ Virginia State Police charged 28-year-old Demetrius M. Brown with second-degree murder in connection with the death of 23-year-old Samantha Okinyi—whose remains were found by bicyclists at High Bridge State Park on August 23—and he was taken into custody on August 29 in Lynchburg. WSET
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The school board met with parents on August 29 to discuss plans for a CTE center update that will improve career training for students. Officials said more details — including changes to programs and scheduling — will be shared soon. WDBJ7
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ VDACS reminded foragers that wild ginseng season will run from September 1 to December 31 and that harvesters must follow rules such as only picking plants with enough age and scars and planting seeds when harvesting. The agency said pickers on public lands must get permits and that removing ginseng from federal lands is prohibited—violators may face fines or jail time. WFXR TV
- ➤ Lynchburg City Council will review whether to restore the $25,000 cut from the Central Virginia Alliance for Community Living Inc. budget for fiscal year 2026 on Sept. 23 – the cut came with a lower city tax rate and now raises concerns about support for older residents. The News & Advance
- ➤ Gov. Glenn Youngkin cut the ribbon at the new academy yesterday—praising its modern design—and said the facility will offer new learning programs for students. WDBJ7
