- ➤ Lynchburg Police said 35-year-old Coty John Walshaw from Forest died in a motorcycle crash in the 3100 block of Odd Fellows Road on August 31 at 8:07 p.m.—witnesses with video or camera footage are urged to contact Officer Dondero or Crime Stoppers. WDBJ7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Liberty University opened a new center in Lynchburg today to give final semester criminal justice students a direct pathway into law enforcement careers by letting them attend the Virginia State Police Basic Trooper Academy + earn certifications while finishing their degrees. Governor Youngkin praised the startup during the press conference and said it will speed up getting troopers onto the streets. WSET

- ➤ Repairs to the James River Bridge will begin next Tuesday under plans by the National Park Service that include deck rehabilitation, a new asphalt overlay, bearing replacement, and parking area repairs — officials say the work is expected to finish by Fall 2026. A section of the Blue Ridge Parkway will be closed with detours in place to manage traffic. WSET
- ➤ The Lynchburg City School Board approved arming school security officers in schools—these district-hired officers must have 10 years of law enforcement experience and meet strict training and approval requirements to deter active shooter incidents. WSET
