- ➤ The Rotary Club of Forest will hold its eighth annual Field of Honor on Sunday, September 7 to honor military veterans, first responders, and firefighters — the event will start with an opening ceremony at 4 p.m. featuring Lynchburg Fire Department Fire Chief Greg Wormser and a ticketed Patriots BBQ fundraiser to support the Forest Fire Department, while 1,000 flags will be on display until September 19 with daily taps at 7 p.m. WFXR TV
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Virginia State Police reported six people were killed in fatal crashes over Labor Day Weekend, down from ten last year; in three crashes the victims were not wearing a seat belt including two motorcyclists—officers enforced the new July 1 seat belt law during Operation CARE. WFXR TV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Kimberly Pannell’s mobile home on Nash Lane in Gladys burned early Friday from intentional arson — Breanna Reynolds was arrested for arson and assault, leaving Pannell and her two children homeless. WSET
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A major downtown project is advancing quickly as Lynchburg's $8M Riverfront Park Amphitheater is ahead of schedule, according to deputy director Clay Simmons. Local business owners expect the venue (to be mostly finished in three or four months) to bring more customers and boost revenue (with higher-end acts planned for next spring). WSET

- ➤ Lynchburg City Schools approved that school security officers may carry guns after they complete required training — a decision made on Sep. 2 that applies mainly to elementary school staff. WDBJ7

- ➤ Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced a partnership between VSP and Liberty University that will boost educational programs in Lynchburg. More details on the initiative are expected soon from his office. WDBJ7
- ➤ A lawsuit challenging a special exception permit for the Three Oaks Manor wedding venue on Phyllis Lea Drive appears headed for a non-suit after the Amherst County Board of Supervisors voted in favor in May and a judge later acquitted the venue’s operators of vehicular assault and stalking charges—neighbors had raised concerns about noise, traffic, and road wear in the area.
