CRIME NEWS

  • A Lynchburg woman was indicted on a murder charge after her 5 month old son's examination showed severe malnutrition — bug bites on his head and hands and diaper rash so severe that skin peeled in two areas as noted in court documents.  The News & Advance

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents in Lynchburg attended a session that taught them which behaviors might put their children at risk — experts explained warning signs and offered guidance to help keep kids safe. The event gave families practical steps to spot and address risky actions.  WDBJ7
  • Gov. Glenn Youngkin cut the ribbon at Liberty University on Tuesday to start a new deal with Virginia State Police—final semester criminal justice students can attend the VSP Basic Trooper Academy to earn their degrees and law enforcement certifications. LU will screen candidates while VSP works to reduce trooper vacancies and add more officers on the streets.  The News & Advance

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lynchburg officials announced Thursday that they were seeking public input on a transportation plan that will improve walking, biking, transit and driving across the city. The plan—developed by CVTPO, the City and GLTC—will use data and community feedback to guide safer access to schools, parks, transit stops and routes.  WSLS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Virginia Department of Health reported 23 mpox cases as of September 1 and noted 27 cases in 2024 with two deaths since the virus first appeared in 2022 — officials explained that the virus spreads through close contact and mainly affects men, and they advise vaccination for those at risk, including people with multiple partners and weakened immune systems.  WDBJ7
