COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, died after being shot by a sniper at a rally at Utah Valley University and had a long-standing relationship with Liberty University where he was scheduled to speak in October—university officials and students held a prayer vigil on campus and recalled his influence on young people.  WSLS 10
  • Presbyterian Cemetery held a wreath-laying ceremony on September 11 to honor 9/11 heroes as 24 years passed since Flight 11 struck the North Tower—displaying a memorial with a Lynchburg steel replica of the Twin Towers funded by Adrian Gagesteyn.  WSET
  • Yesterday, Lynchburg Workout Anytime Gym honored 9/11 first responders by hosting a tribute event at its facility—drawing local community members to remember their service. The event recognized the courage and sacrifice of these responders and brought the community together in respect.  WDBJ7
  • Local firefighters visited College Hill Apartments in Lynchburg on Wednesday to hand out plastic firefighter hats and let children climb into a fire engine. The event offered a fun and safe way for kids to learn about fire safety.  The News & Advance

CRIME NEWS

  • The Campbell County Sheriff's Office unveiled a new interview space for adult survivors of sexual assault and interpersonal violence, offering a safe environment and trauma-informed resources—funded by a Project Beloved grant and completed on July 26.  WSET

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Academy Center of the Arts in Lynchburg is hosting the fifth annual Virginia Elvis Festival from Thursday through Sunday, featuring six tribute artists and 12 contestants in three rounds of competition (the winner will later compete at Graceland).  WSET

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia legislators questioned how nearly $2 billion in Medicaid funding has improved nursing home care and demanded better oversight for residents. A legislative subcommittee noted staffing shortages and rising complaints—while an advisory board will meet next week and a lawsuit over funding vetoes is pending.  The News & Advance
