- ➤ A new private pickleball club called The Secret Pickle will open in Lynchburg with one outdoor court and several indoor courts — it offers a kitchen, conference room and lounge for its 100-member self-service club that relies on word of mouth and charges around $100 a month. Founder Tim Dantas said the club will blend business and recreation before the end of the year. WSET

- ➤ Kim Phuc Phan Thi, known as the 'napalm girl' from the Vietnam War, received the Pearl S. Buck Award at Randolph College on Wednesday — an honor that marks her journey from surviving severe injuries to becoming an advocate for wartime child victims.
