COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A long-abandoned property at 12th and Kemper is set for a major revitalization as owners Ahmed Jahangir and Junaid Kazi launch a multi-phase project with Unique Appliances opening first—bringing jobs and essential services to the neighborhood. The project will add a laundromat, medical center and restaurant, with local workers being hired and the entire building set to open by spring. WSLS 10
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Farmers in the region are still recovering from an early April freeze that destroyed most of the apple crops at Johnson's Orchard—Danny Johnson said nearly 99% of his trees lost fruit, and Marshall Saunders of Saunders Brothers reported that about half of his apples and some peaches and pears were damaged. Johnson’s winery is keeping his farm afloat while both farmers urge locals to support their produce as they plan to bounce back over the next few years. WSET
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Bedford County School Board voted 5-1 to move forward with a redistricting plan for Forest zone elementary schools to reduce overcrowding at Forest Elementary and New London Academy. The plan—subject to community feedback at a public hearing on Oct 9 at Jefferson Forest High School—is set to have new bus routes and boundary changes implemented in August2026. The News & Advance

- ➤ Lynchburg Regional Airport is nearing completion of its runway project—final work is underway and airport officials expect the improvement to finish soon. WDBJ7
- ➤ The final phase of the Fifth Street Utility and Streetscape Project will begin in October to replace a century-old water main, repair the sanitary sewer, improve the stormwater system, repave the street, and add wider sidewalks, ramps, bus stops, light poles, a retaining wall, and landscaping along Fifth Street from Taylor Street to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge in Lynchburg. Motorists will experience one-way westbound traffic with a detour for eastbound travel onto Langhorne Road—Park Avenue and back to Fifth Street, and construction will take 15 months with completion expected in December 2026. - ➤ Liberty Christian Academy will hold its Orange Out for Cash football game on Friday, September 19th to honor Cash Gaudio—who was shot last fall—by filling the stands with orange and hosting a tailgate fundraiser with $10 meals to support his foundation; the event will also include a new spirit award at halftime to recognize his legacy. - ➤ Bedford County will host two major disc golf championships in 2026, with the PDGA Champions Cup at New London Tech from April 9 to 12 and the Disc Golf Pro Tour Championship at Ivy Hill from October 15 to 18—expected to draw over 1,000 players and generate more than $5 million in local revenue.
