COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Girl Scout Troop 99 from Forest installed a communication board at Falling Creek Park to help nonverbal children share with others — the board was designed by members with nonverbal siblings and completed as part of a bronze award project — and it is expected to benefit all children playing at the accessible playground.  WSET
  • Lynchburg firefighters are taking part in the Fill the Boot for MDA fundraiser to help people living with neuromuscular diseases. They raised $5,500 on Saturday and will visit shopping centers and intersections over the next week as part of a 70-year tradition.  WSET
  • Hyland Heights Baptist Church in Rustburg has started planning a community care center to support local residents.  The News & Advance
  • Layman Family Farms opened its pumpkin patch in Bedford on September 21—inviting families to enjoy seasonal activities and pick pumpkins for the fall season.  WDBJ7

  • The Lynchburg Art Club held its 52nd annual Lynchburg Art Festival at E.C. Glass High School—recognizing regional artists for their work.  The News & Advance

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The intersection of Fifth Street — Commerce Street in Lynchburg will be closed for 10 days as work continues on the John Lynch Memorial Bridge Repair Project. Traffic will detour along Main Street and Seventh Street so drivers can avoid the work zone.  WSLS 10
  • Renderings and conceptual plans for a new fire station at the Amelon Commerce Center in Madison Heights were presented to the Amherst County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 16, showing an 18,000 square foot design with room for growth—construction is estimated to begin in summer pending further funding review as the board weighs current debt from recent projects.  The News & Advance
  • Tomorrow, Lynchburg City Council will update the 2025 and 2026 budgets at a finance committee meeting at 3 p.m. and a city council session at 7 p.m.—the changes will use state funds to cover extra expenditures and may add new full-time staff in social services, the sheriff’s office and the commonwealth’s attorney’s office.  Cardinal News

HEALTH NEWS

  • State officials and lawmakers ended their listening tour in Roanoke Friday—hearing from local residents and health leaders about challenges facing small rural hospitals—to guide Virginia’s bid for the Rural Health Transformation Program. The proposal is due by Nov. 5 and aims to support rural areas, including communities near Lynchburg, that have seen recent Medicaid funding cuts.  Cardinal News

  • The Battle of the Blue Ridge between Liberty and James Madison took place Saturday at Williams Stadium—fans lined up early for a long-awaited rivalry. Liberty fell short as James Madison won a new trophy, and the teams will meet again next season on Sept. 5.  WSET
