COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Survivors of the Backstreet Cafe tragedy gathered in Lynchburg to mark 25 years since the incident—sharing personal memories that highlight the lasting impact on the community.  WDBJ7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Owner Chris England opened Driftwood Seafood Co. & Raw Bar on Crowell Lane next to Clubhouse Sports Bar & Grill to fill a seafood void in the area by offering fresh catch options like crab legs, shrimp and oysters in a dining room set apart from the bar; the patio will be finished in spring.  The News & Advance
  • Our Daily Bread Bakery & Bistro closed two locations on September 22—part of a business reorganization.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Friday, September 19, Lynchburg City Schools launched the Lynchburg Express food truck designed and operated by students to gain real business experience. E.C. Glass and Heritage High School students manage the truck with teacher support and local middle school students will learn business skills as it prepares to serve at community events this spring.  WFXR TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lynchburg is seeking community input on a new transportation plan to improve travel for everyone—especially those who walk, bike, or take public transit. Residents can share ideas at a public meeting tomorrow at the Miller Center from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. or complete an online survey open until Sept. 30 to help shape future improvements.  WSLS 10
  • Steve Dunn, the superintendent of Lynchburg Water Resource Recovery Facility, was given the William D. Hatfield Award on September 10 in Virginia Beach for his leadership in running the plant that treats 13 million gallons a day and protects the James River. Lynchburg Water Resources also won a Public Information Award for its work on the Blackwater CSO Tunnel Project— the city’s largest capital improvement effort to stop sewer overflows from Blackwater Creek and the James River.  City of Lynchburg
  • Motorists near the John Lynch Memorial Bridge repair project face a detour until October 1 — drivers on Fifth Street cannot turn left onto Commerce Street and vice versa, so they must use Main and Seventh Streets instead. The repair began in January and will finish in spring; emergency vehicles always have access.  City of Lynchburg
  • First Lady Suzanne Youngkin visited Four Truths Recovery Women & Children’s House yesterday—she met with staff and program leaders to support the facility's recovery services for women and children.  WDBJ7

SPORTS NEWS

  • A new pickleball tournament series called Triple Pickle will kick off in Lynchburg — organized by the Free Clinic, the Boys and Girls Club, and Impact Living Services to support local nonprofits — with the first event scheduled for October 4 after registration ends on October 1. A December tournament will feature food trucks and the final event will be hosted by the Boys and Girls Club in March.  WSET
