🏘️ Community
Bedford Hills Elementary started its BIKE program today that awards students bikes for good academics, attendance, and behavior.
One Community One Voice launched the initiative and school leaders say city officials and volunteers support its future expansion—Believing in Kids Excelling.
Over the past year, God's Pit Crew logged 200,000 volunteer hours and built 29 new homes to help nearly 900 families recover from Hurricane Helene.
The volunteer group will build 10 more fully furnished homes in the coming months to rebuild lives.
Dozens gathered on Friday, October 3 at Lynchburg's Monument Terrace to honor Jim Tennant, a veteran advocate who died from a motorcycle accident on September 26.
His family urged local community members to carry on his work for veterans.
🎓 Education
The Virginia Department of Education announced that minimum passing scores for math and reading SOL tests will be raised in four to five years while seniors graduating in spring are exempt.
The department said updated curricula led to higher cutoffs and will meet with school administrators in October + gather feedback on how the changes will affect students.
R.S. Payne Elementary School celebrated its 100th birthday on Friday with a party featuring a drumline, cake — and singing that thrilled students and teachers.
The school will begin renovations in 2027 after Council awarded millions to update the building while preserving its historic charm.
🏛️ Government
Lynchburg’s Fifth Street Project began its final phase on October 3 to complete street improvements along the corridor.
City officials say the work will continue for several weeks + further updates will be shared as progress is made.
Beginning Monday, October 6, Lynchburg Water Resources will work with contractors Vortex and Culy — they will rehabilitate nearly 9,600 linear feet of sewer pipes and upgrade 40 manholes using trenchless methods to prevent backups and overflows.
Residents at locations such as 12th Street and Aaron Place should remove vehicles and expect minor traffic delays during work on weekdays for 70 days.
