COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Miriam's House announced plans on October 7 to open a new family shelter in Lynchburg that will offer temporary housing and support services for local families. The shelter will fill a growing need in the community—local officials expect it to open soon. WDBJ7
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Lynchburg City School Board will hear a presentation on Tuesday, October 14th, about adding metal detectors in schools—if approved, the division will begin vendor evaluations in October and November and plan staff training at a trial school before preparing a rollout to a second high school between November and December. - ➤ Sobrius is asking to expand its addiction treatment services to a property on Westerly Drive that will house a group home and treatment center for up to 36 patients. The conditional-use permit will be reviewed today at 4 p.m. in City Hall’s council chamber—if approved, final City Council approval is expected on Nov. 12 as Sobrius plans a meet-and-greet with neighbors to address safety concerns. - ➤ On Tuesday night, Campbell County Supervisors voted five to two to deny Mesh Capital LLC's proposal for a data center in Concord—citizens cheered as they voiced concerns over high water use, rising electric costs, and the removal of a protective proffer on a 57 acre property. WDBJ7
- ➤ Lynchburg Police Department commended 911 operator Amber Dizon for her life-saving work guiding a caller through CPR over the phone during a recent emergency—she relied on her extensive training to instruct and support the caller until paramedics arrived. WSET

- ➤ Local experts from Virginia Cooperative Extension and a local dog groomer reported a surge in tick populations this fall, noting that tiny seed ticks are increasingly common on trails and on pets. Residents are advised to wear long sleeves & use repellent when outdoors to protect against these pests. WSET
