COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Texas Inn announced Tuesday that it will celebrate its 90th birthday today with 90-cent chili dogs available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at its Lynchburg locations — 422 Main St. and 110 Cornerstone St. — while limiting orders to six dogs per customer, according to owner Dave Saunders.  WSLS 10
  • Miriam’s House will open its first-ever family homeless shelter in Lynchburg in 2026. The new shelter offers private units with shared community spaces—designed for safety and support—as staff help families move toward stable housing and jobs.  WDBJ7
  • Firefighters gathered on October 6 at Miller Park to honor heroes who died in the line of duty. The ceremony featured wreath-laying at the Firefighters Fountain and bagpipe music (part of Fire Prevention Week ending on October 11) as Chief Greg Wormser emphasized community support for affected families.  WFXR TV
  • After a gas explosion nearly a year ago left Forest Level Baptist Church in Forest in ruins, its congregation held services at a nearby school. Demolition has begun on the original site—this third building will be rebuilt with a new design expected in 10 to 11 months.  WDBJ7

CRIME NEWS

  • Lynchburg Police announced that 18-year-old Alexandria Rose Robertson—who is autistic and was last seen on Monday near Heritage Circle from Danbury Drive wearing a gray long-sleeve shirt and jeans with no shoes—was found safe this morning.  WFXR TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Several events will light up the weekend in Hill City as Wolfbane’s immersive 'Hocus Pocus' movie event and Scaremare will bring fear and fun + Jefferson Forest High School will perform 'Bye Bye Birdie' while Appomattox hosts a three-day historic railroad festival.  The News & Advance

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Lynchburg began a national search for a new president—officials said the process will soon choose a leader to shape the university’s future.  WDBJ7
  • Rockbridge County Public Schools will use a $169,000 grant to upgrade its Innovation Center at Rockbridge High School for cybersecurity, welding and advanced manufacturing programs—new lab spaces and equipment will ready students for local workforce opportunities by next school year.  WDBJ7
  • The University of Lynchburg has started a national search for its next president as Dr. Alison Morrison-Shetlar plans to retire next summer. A search committee—working with Isaacson, Miller and community representatives—will hold listening sessions this fall and winter to gather feedback from faculty, staff, and students.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lynchburg Water Resources will host free tours of its College Hill Water Treatment Plant and Water Resource Recovery Facility on October 16 at 6:00 p.m. to educate residents on the water treatment process and wastewater science — registered visitors can learn how these facilities work to provide safe drinking water and clean effluent.  City of Lynchburg
  • On October 7, the Lynchburg Fire Department honored two citizens for bravery in saving a family from a house fire on Aragon Street—several firefighters were also recognized for their hard work at the annual awards and promotions ceremony.  WFXR TV

  • Aubri Willis from E.C. Glass hit her 1,000th career kill on Tuesday against Heritage during a volleyball match—she credited her parents for her success and said she plans to keep playing with family and friends after graduation.  WSET
